Of nearly a century since its inception, the Beverly Hills Fire Department has seen the appointment of only ten individuals to the esteemed position of Fire Chief, Fire Chief Greg Barton is serving as the 10th Fire Chief. Fire Chief Greg Barton has dedicated nearly three decades serving the Beverly Hills community. His journey with the Beverly Hills Fire Department is marked by an unwavering commitment to safety and excellence. Chief Barton also holds the distinction as the 39th Certified Fire Chief (CFC) in California’s history, this is a testament to his expertise and dedication in the field of fire safety and leadership. Academically, Chief Barton has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History, followed by a Master’s degree in Public Administration. In his pursuit of further expertise and knowledge, he attended the following: United States Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy earning the Executive Fire Officer (EFO) designation; Naval Post Graduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security-Executive Leaders Program; Los Angeles Fire Department Leadership Academy, and the Fire Service Executive Development Institute organized by the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
Throughout his career, Chief Barton has actively contributed to various committees, significantly impacting fire safety and policy development. His roles have included serving as President of the Fire Chiefs Department for the League of California Cities, participating in numerous policy committees for the League of California Cities, and being a part of the Statewide Training and Education Advisory Committee for the Office of the State Fire Marshal. An integral part of the California State Fire Training, Chief Barton has contributed to the Chief Officer Curriculum development and is a respected instructor within the California Fire Service Training and Education System. His expertise is recognized through numerous certifications from both the California State Fire Marshal Office and the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
Chief Barton’s influence extends beyond the local level; he is a renowned national, state, and local presenter. His community involvement is profound, serving on the Board of the Children’s Burn Foundation, the Maple Counseling Center, and being an active member of the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Committee, among others. He holds significant positions such as Secretary/Treasurer for the Executive Fire Officers Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and President-elect of the Beverly Hills Rotary Club. His career is adorned with accolades, including Firefighter of the Year from the Kiwanis Club, the Beverly Hills Fire Department Felix Rothchild award, and the Beverly Hills Masonic Lodge. A highlight of his career was becoming only the 3rd person to receive the Fred C. Cunningham award for Distinguished Service from the Beverly Hills City Council in 2021, a rare honor bestowed for exceptional community service. In 2024, Chief Barton’s commitment and spirit of generosity were further recognized as he was awarded the Children’s Burn Foundation Giving New Hope Award, a tribute to his spirit of generosity and years of dedicated service to safety and the community.
